About us

How it all began

In spring 2007, Alex Weigel and his daughter Johanna Bestgen decided not to spend their next holidays in California or Crete, but to travel to Africa. The aim was to let the teenager experience the sometimes difficult conditions under which a large part of the earthlings live. It quickly became clear that Kenya - more precisely Nairobi - would be the destination, since an acquaintance had already engaged there.
In August 2008, the time had come. This three-week vacation in the Nairobi slum, which they spent every day with new friends, changed their lives. So much was needed here and so much seemed possible. It quickly became clear: something had to happen. Alex Weigel immediately began planning the establishment of an aid organization and traveled to Nairobi again in December 2008 to build up a local network. In January 2009, a very small school was finally started in a rented, electricity- and water-free mud hut with a Montessori teacher and a volunteer assistant teacher.
In Switzerland, the prerequisites should be created for this project to be expanded and sustainable. In 2009, the GOOD HEARTS organization was founded as a Swiss association. Now the fundraising in Switzerland could begin.

Vision & Ethos

The GOOD HEARTS organization works on a voluntary basis at the board level. With regards for the project employees on site, we are committed to fair employment conditions in accordance with local legal regulations and association recommendations. We handle the resources entrusted to us responsibly and in a budget, are strictly committed to economy, sustainability and transparency, do not maintain vehicles, limit expenses, especially for management, to the bare minimum and also regularly accept personal inconveniences.

We are aware that donors and sponsors primarily want to help the children in need and support their environment and respond to this desire for the best of our knowledge and conscience.

Founder and Project Manager

“To make the project go well, I am on site almost all year round and also live in Kibra, one of the largest slums in Africa.”

Since 2009, Alex Weigel has been taking care of the children in Kibera with full commitment.

The board

All work is done on a voluntary basis, so that your donations will directly benefit the children in Kenya!
