On the morning of July 9, our schoolchildren narrowly escaped death. But the school was severely damaged, and while we mourn the death of a 17-year-old girl, thieves were quick to take advantage of the situation. Please help immediately.
It happened on Thursday morning. A heavy truck veered off the highway and crashed at full speed directly into our school grounds—right into the middle of our newest classroom building. It was a miracle: the classrooms were still empty at that moment. Yet the tragedy is immense: the truck took the life of a 17-year-old girl on her way to school. A motorcyclist was seriously injured. Our cook was in shock, just meters away from the crash. And yet she embodies the incredible strength of this school: By noon, she was back at the stove, cooking the children their much-needed lunch. Because she knows: For these children from the slums, this school is their lifeline amid hunger and poverty.Why donate NOW?The truck is gone, but the lingering problems are significant. To protect the completely open area, we hurriedly set up an initial temporary barrier today. Before the barrier was in place, thieves had already stolen schoolbooks. In addition, countless books were destroyed by leaking water. Twenty-five school desks and 50 chairs have been permanently destroyed.
